The media industry is a business in which operators include large multinational companies, private entrepreneurs, public entities and everything in between.
Learning objectives
The task illustrates the business strategy and financial dependencies of different media to students. The task helps students to more easily find and identify responsible media.
Assignment and detailed instructions

– Kuluttaja.fi - Find out on the website what the source of funding for the media channel is (advertisements, subscription fees, membership fees, public funding).
- How would you estimate the source of funding to affect the content? Is the content of the media channel responsible journalism? (For more information on funding, see the Journalist’s Guidelines, sections 15 and 16)
- Prepare a presentation of about 5 minutes about the media channel studied, its sources of funding and its journalistic quality, to present to the others.
- The teacher selects two students from the other groups to give brief feedback on the presentation.
Materials and equipment
For taking notes. A computer and video projector are required for the presentation, so that the media channel’s homepage (links) can be presented to others.
Time use
60–90 min depending on the number of groups (presentation approx. 5 min, comments and discussion 5 min per project)
