S2.3 Independent task – I am a journalist and I am allowed to do my job?

The assignment helps the student to better understand the connections of media and journalism to society. The task sheds light on the work of a journalist and its challenges.

Assignment and detailed instructions

  1. Read the article written by journalist Ida Erämaa: Näkökulma: Perussuomalaiset patistamassa toimittajia takaisin Kekkosen ruotuun
  2. What is the central message of the article?
  3. Watch the video section on Ida Erämaa’s online targeting (start of the video, duration approx. 31 min): 6 July 2023: Maalitus, Ranskan mellakat, toimittaja arkussa and answer the questions:
    1. The article is called Näkokulma (Perspective). What is the meaning of perspective?
    1. Ida was targeted online after the article. What does online targeting mean? What consequences can it have for the target? You can find more information about Ida Erämaa’s case online.
  4. If you were a young summer journalist, what would you like to write about?
    1. What thoughts could the topics stimulate in the readers?
    1. What impact would the reactions have on you and your work as a journalist?
